Between 1954 and 1966, in secluded hotels of Dutch
forests, Burgundian inns, Alpine palaces and Canadian
resorts, a group of some eighty men gathered each
spring to discuss the fate of the Atlantic world. There
were no votes, no communiqués, no press. From those
thirteen meetings came many of the ideas that would
shape the post-war order: European integration, the
China question, the modernisation of the Third World,
the Atlantic Alliance after de Gaulle.

THE BILDERBERG CONFERENCES reconstructs, year by
year and hotel by hotel, the first thirteen meetings of
the most discreet — and most persistently misunderstood
— institution of the twentieth century. Drawing on
leaked reports, private papers and presidential archives,
it tells the story of Bilderberg as it really was: neither
omnipotent conspiracy nor inconsequential lunch, but
what its founder called a “factory of initiatives”.
